Frequently Asked Questions

Q. I am looking for help on Iron-on Adhesives, Zots, or Tape Runners

A. We have three sections of FAQ and by clicking on one of the three links below we can guide you to your question.

Iron-on Adhesives and Vinyl

Zots

Tape Runners

Q. Is Iron-On Vinyl food safe?

A. Due to the recent Consumer Product Safety Act of  2009 regarding the exposure of children to plastics, Therm O Web tested our Iron-On Vinyl product for full compatibility with new government regulations. Our testing found that Iron-On Vinyl contains no BPA or lead content. However, Iron-On Vinyl does utilize a plasticizer, DIDP, and even though this Phthalate is not banned by the government, as a precaution we would suggest that Iron-On Vinyl not be used on items that are meant to be chewed on or sucked on by children.

Q. How do I remove HeatnBond Iron-On Adhesive from fabric?

A. HeatnBond is a permanent adhesive. In order to remove HeatnBond from fabric, it can either be taken to a drycleaner that uses the chemical carbon tetrachloride (perc) which dissolves the adhesive in the fabric (please note that many states no longer use Perc in the dry cleaning process. It is best to call ahead and ask your dry cleaner.);

  • Or a product called Un-Du may be used in an attempt to remove the adhesive.  Un-Du is a liquid adhesive remover which can be found in the scrapbooking section of major retailers such as Target or Michaels or at your local Scrapbook Store.
  • Simply squirt it on the area where the adhesive needs to be removed, and use the scraper to help eliminate it from the garment or fabric.  The Un-Du will assist in dissolving the adhesive in the fabric.  Finally, launder as normal.

Q. I used HeatnBond Iron-On Adhesives and it isn't sticking to my project...why?

A. All fabrics to be used MUST be laundered (without any fabric softener in the washer OR the dryer) prior to ironing on the adhesive. The laundering process will remove any “sizing” or coatings that exist on the fabrics when purchased.  Sizings can inhibit the bond from occurring correctly.  In the same way, Fabric Softener of any kind in the washing or drying process can have the same effect of inhibiting the bonding process.

Otherwise, the heating time may need to be adjusted depending on the thickness of the materials to be bonded. A thicker piece of material or several layers may need a slightly longer heating time...by a few extra seconds. Do NOT overheat! Overheating can cause the adhesive to melt into the fabrics and not allow the pieces to stick together.

Q. Why should HeatnBond not be overheated?

A. Overheating may melt the adhesive into the fabric and cause an insufficient bond between the material and the adhesive. Please follow suggested heat and time requirements for proper adhesion. Slightly longer pressing times may be required for thick or heavy materials.

Q. Does Iron-On Vinyl or HeatnBond Adhesives come in widths larger than 17”?

A. No, 17” is the largest width available, but if it is needed to be used on a wider project, it can be adhered next to another piece or slightly overlapping to create a virtually seamless effect.

Q. Can Zots be used on photos or embellishments that may need to be removed at a later date?

A. There are now REMOVABLE Zots available! They come in a Value Pack box or in convienient to use Zots Singles bags. They are 3/8 inch diameter (otherwise known as our Medium size).

All other sizes of Zots Memory and Zots Craft are permanent adhesive and should only be removed by using an adhesive remover such as Un-Du (found in the scrapbook section at national stores such as Target and Michaels or local scrapbook stores).

Q. Why is there excess paper left over on my roll of Zots? Is this roll short Zots?

A. We used to wind the Zots onto a 1" diameter cardboard core.  The excess paper at the end of the roll was used start the winding process, while protecting the Zots that were at the end of the roll. The several feet of paper at the end of the roll caused people to think they were shorted Zots. Therefore, beginning in 2005, we switched to a 2" core and started to use extra Zots to adhere the paper to the roll (thereby lessening the amount of excess paper at the end).

The machinery also counts the Zots while making them to ensure the correct count in each box, while using less paper at the end of the core. Therefore, you can be ensured that the extra Zots at the end were not counted in your "usable" portion in the box.

Q. If Zots do become bonded to an unintended surface, how can they be removed?

A. The best way to remove a Zot that becomes adhered to a surface by mistake is to use an adhesive remover such as Un-Du. Which is available in the scrapbooking section of national chains such as Target and Michaels or local scrapbook stores.

Q. Why is slow consistent application necessary when using the Memory Tape Runner?

A. Using the Memory Tape Runner in a slow and consistent manner allows the dispenser to dispense correctly and the adhesive to go down smoothly.  The mylar liner is a slick surface, if used too quickly, the mylar could slip off track and cause undo frustration. Or the adhesive could skip and not apply in an even fashion.

Q. What do I do if my Tape Runner veers off the track?

A. If the adhesive does veer off track, apply the tip of the runner to the paper and wiggle it forward to realign the mylar liner. Do not try to pull it back on with your fingers. Trying to pull it with your fingers may actually push the liner completely off track, in which case you would need to cut the mylar and respool it to continue using the adhesive.
